BU scholarship rules

Will outside scholarships lower your BU bill?

We checked the school’s published rule. Here is the answer and what to do with it.

Verified Jul 20262 months ago

The short answer

The scholarship may reduce loans before school aid.

Outside scholarships reduce self-help components of the aid package before institutional grants or scholarships. Adjustments are made only if required by federal or state regulations or if total aid exceeds federal need-based eligibility (COA minus SAI) or BU's published cost of attendance.

What to do

Use this rule before you apply. Favor awards that lower what your family pays.

Published policy type

Loan-first displacement

At BU, an outside scholarship reduces loan offers before touching institutional grants. The strategy follows from that: every $1 in outside scholarship is effectively $1 less in graduation debt.

bu.edu publishes the $98,419 cost-of-attendance worksheet the math is run against.

Stacking policy at BU

Outside scholarships reduce self-help components of the aid package before institutional grants or scholarships. Adjustments are made only if required by federal or state regulations or if total aid exceeds federal need-based eligibility (COA minus SAI) or BU's published cost of attendance.

BU's private-scholarship policy page (verified 2026-07-23) states its 'primary objective is to allow students to retain the maximum possible benefit from their outside scholarship by reducing self-help components of your financial aid package before reducing institutional grant or scholarship assistance.' Outside awards must be reported to BU Financial Assistance in writing. The page does not itemize which self-help component (loans vs. work-study) is reduced first, and it carries an asterisked note 'Effective for awards beginning in the 26/27 Academic Year.' A separate rule — internal combinability, not outside displacement — says an additional award from another entity within BU reduces the need-based grant by that amount.

Subject: Outside-scholarship treatment question, fall applicant

Dear BU Financial Aid Office,

I'm a fall applicant reviewing how outside scholarships interact with my institutional aid package. I've read the public policy at https://www.bu.edu/finaid/how-aid-works/types-of-aid/scholarships-grants/merit-based/private/ and the $98,419 cost-of-attendance worksheet.

If I win a $5,000 outside scholarship after the package is built, can you confirm it reduces my Direct Loan offer first, before any institutional grant is touched?

If the loan offer is smaller than the outside award, what is the next aid type that gets reduced (work-study, institutional grant, other)?

A written answer (email is fine) is important because the outside-scholarship awarding bodies want confirmation before disbursing. Thank you for the time.

How BU compares across our verified dataset

  • 145 of 749 verified schools in our dataset use loan-first displacement.

BU is in a recognizable cluster (145 schools share this category). That framing matters when comparing peer schools that may publish the policy differently or not at all.

  • 665 of 749 verified schools publish at least one four-year renewable merit award.

BU is one of them. The cohort minority (84 schools) only awards one-year scholarships, which means the four-year value families assume on a brochure quote isn't guaranteed at every school.
