John Jay College
Decision sheet

New York · Research checked 2026-07-02 · School research, not an aid offer

The starting point

John Jay is a low-cost CUNY public college (NY-resident tuition $3,465/semester, ~$6,930/year) with NO automatic stats-based merit scholarship for incoming students; its named institutional awards are mostly need-aware or for currently-enrolled students, and most large awards listed are external national fellowships.

Selection beyond grades and scores. These awards are not recorded as automatic on grades and scores. Read each award's selection rules, application steps and dates. Meeting a minimum is not an award offer.

Awards to discuss

Becas Scholarship Program (CUNY)

$4,500 to $6,030 · Published range

Not recorded as automatic on grades and scores. Read the selection rules.

Eligibility: Demonstrate academic excellence AND financial need AND a commitment to service in the Mexican community; freshmen and sophomores are eligible to apply; CUNY undergraduate/graduate students. Application required (CUNY-administered via the Mexican Studies Institute).

Renewal: Renewal terms not published on the funding page; program includes a monthly professionalization seminar and a 200-hour internship requirement.

Other terms: Merit-AND-need award (not pure merit): the page lists academic excellence together with financial need and a service commitment. Requires a separate application plus seminar/internship participation. This is one of the few John Jay-eligible institutional named awards with a published dollar amount.

Ringel Humanities Scholars + Dean and Ronnie Ringel Humanities Endowed Scholarship

$1,000 stipend; eligible to apply for the $4,000 endowed scholarship · Published award terms

Not recorded as automatic on grades and scores. Read the selection rules.

Eligibility: Currently-enrolled John Jay undergraduates with an interest in the humanities; selected into the year-long Ringel Humanities Scholars program. Not an incoming-freshman entry award.

Renewal: One-year program; the $1,000 stipend is paid at the end of the year-long program. The $4,000 endowed scholarship is a separate, application-based award open to program participants.

Other terms: Academic/merit award but for continuing students, not an incoming-freshman scholarship. The $1,000 stipend is paid at program completion; the $4,000 Ringel Endowed Scholarship requires a separate application.

Ask before you decide

  1. Which entering-year policy and residency category apply to us? What are the admission and scholarship deadlines?
  2. What grades and credits are required to renew, and for how many terms?
  3. How would other school awards or outside scholarships change the offer?

Recorded stacking policy: John Jay states that scholarships typically do NOT reduce entitlement aid (Pell Grants, NY State grants) but MAY reduce loans or other aid, and that combined aid cannot exceed the cost of attendance. This protects need-based grants but caps total aid at COA.
