Renewal risk profile

Edward Waters's renewal bar is achievable for steady students but isn't generous. Most awards require a cumulative GPA in the 3.0–3.4 band plus full-time enrollment. Audit the strictest tier on this school's list before assuming the four-year value is locked in.

  • Presidential Scholarship: 3.25 GPA
  • Honors Scholarship: 3.00 GPA
  • Merit Scholarship: 3.0 GPA

How families lose this aid

  • Skipping the essay for the top two awards.

Both the Presidential (3.80 GPA) and Honors (3.25 GPA) scholarships state 'Students must also submit an essay to be eligible.'

  • Transfer students expecting multi-year merit.

The Transfer Scholarship 'is non-renewable and is only good for one academic year' — budget years two through four without it.

  • Florida seniors waiting until college to apply for Bright Futures.

EWU's page warns: 'Apply during his/her last year in high school, before graduation, or you will forfeit all future eligibility for a Bright Futures Scholarship.'

  • Dropping to a light course load.

Renewable awards require registering for and earning at least 12 credit hours per semester; renewal GPA cliffs are 3.25 (Presidential) and 3.0 (Honors, Merit).

Renewal questions families ask

Presidential: 3.25. Honors: 3.00. Merit: 3.0. All renewable up to eight semesters with at least 12 credit hours registered and earned per semester. Transfer Scholarship and Freshman Grant are one-year, non-renewable awards.
