Stacking Outside Scholarships at Gardner-Webb

How Gardner-Webb treats outside scholarships when they arrive on top of institutional merit aid.

The verdict

Mixed displacement

At Gardner-Webb, an outside scholarship is treated category-by-category, where some aid stacks and some displaces. The strategy follows from that: the answer depends on which aid category the outside award lands against, so get the order in writing.

Stacking policy at Gardner-Webb

Mixed regime: the 'Other Scholarships' (Luther Butler, Christian Service, Legacy) 'can be on top of other academic scholarships,' but the Ignite full-tuition award REPLACES prior institutional offers and can be reduced by federal/state aid (Pell, NC Need Based Scholarship); athletic scholarships REDUCE non-athletic aid when added; and Church Matching is capped at the cost of tuition counting all GW aid. A dedicated 'Non-GWU Scholarships' (outside scholarships) policy page exists but was not opened.

Verbatim rules: (1) 'Your non-athletic aid will be reduced once the athletic scholarship is added to your financial aid package.' (2) Ignite: 'If selected, any prior institutional scholarship offers are replaced. Federal or state aid may adjust the total scholarship value.' (3) Church match capped 'up to the cost of tuition (including all GW aid as well as the church matching amount).' (4) 'The scholarships mentioned below... can be on top of other academic scholarships.'

Common stacking mistakes

  • Ignite winners assuming the full-tuition award stacks with everything.

The page warns twice: 'any prior institutional scholarship offers are replaced,' and 'sources of federal and state aid such as Pell, NC Need Based Scholarship, could reduce the value of the Academic Fellows.' It also excludes books, fees, summer terms, credits over 18 hours, and music lessons.

  • Submitting the Church Matching application after August 31.

Late submissions are not matched — the church gift is credited only 'as an outside scholarship for the exact amount of the check.' Only one church scholarship is matched per student, and the match is capped at the cost of tuition counting all GW aid.

Stacking questions families ask

Does Gardner-Webb match my church's scholarship?
Yes — dollar for dollar up to the cost of tuition (counting all GW aid), for one Christian church/organization scholarship per year, if the application is in by August 31. After that, the check is just an outside scholarship.

Rules that bite at Gardner-Webb

The trip wires we'd flag in a custom playbook. Each is derived from Gardner-Webb's own published policy, not generic advice.

  • renewalInstitutional Scholarships and Grants (Trustee / Presidential / Provost / Dean's / Achievement Scholarships; Opportunity Grant): renewal floor that quietly knocks awards out

Requires full-time enrollment (12 hours or more) and maintaining a grade point average in accordance with the institution's Scholarship Maintenance Policy (specific GPA on a separate page not opened). A single rough term can end a four-year award here without warning if the GPA floor isn't met cumulatively.

  • displacementDifferent aid types are displaced differently

Gardner-Webb treats loans, work-study, and institutional grant under different rules. The same $5,000 outside award can land against any of them depending on category.

Subject: Outside-scholarship treatment question, fall applicant

Dear Gardner-Webb Financial Aid Office,

I'm a fall applicant reviewing how outside scholarships interact with my institutional aid package. I've read the public policy at https://gardner-webb.edu/admissions-aid/scholarships-and-grants/.

Which institutional aid types are protected from outside-award displacement, and which can be reduced?

Is the displacement order published anywhere internally, even if not on the public site? Families need this to compare schools.

A written answer (email is fine) is important because the outside-scholarship awarding bodies want confirmation before disbursing. Thank you for the time.

How Gardner-Webb compares across our verified dataset

  • 86 of 751 verified schools in our dataset use mixed displacement.

Gardner-Webb is in the modest minority (86 schools share this category). That framing matters when comparing peer schools that may publish the policy differently or not at all.

  • 669 of 751 verified schools publish at least one four-year renewable merit award.

Gardner-Webb is one of them. The cohort minority (82 schools) only awards one-year scholarships, which means the four-year value families assume on a brochure quote isn't guaranteed at every school.
