    Who qualifies

    Academic colleges and departments are responsible for selecting individuals. No additional application required — selection is from the admission application. Students are encouraged to also complete the General Application in the Madison Scholarships Hub for additional opportunities.

    How to keep it

    Students must achieve a 3.0 cumulative JMU grade point average by the end of each academic year to qualify for renewal. Some scholarships have additional requirements stated in the financial aid offer.

    Worth knowing

    The 75% peg is unusual — most public-flagship merit awards use a flat dollar amount, but JMU's Madison Award scales with in-state tuition each year. For OOS recipients, the dollar value covers a smaller percentage of total OOS tuition since the award is calculated against in-state base.

    Highly competitive. Pell grant-eligible students from the Commonwealth of Virginia with emphasis on first-generation students or students with limited prior exposure to the college process. Open to incoming first-year and transfer students plus current JMU students. FAFSA must be filed by January 1 for full consideration.

  1. The Madison Award is calculated against IN-STATE tuition and comprehensive fees, not OOS tuition. OOS recipients still pay the full nonresident tuition premium on top of the discounted in-state portion. Convert the percentage to dollars at JMU's published in-state rate before modeling the actual OOS net price.

  2. JMU has 400+ scholarships annually, most accessed through the Madison Scholarships Hub. The General Application is what surfaces matching opportunities — skipping it removes you from consideration for the bulk of departmental and named awards that sit alongside the Madison Award.

  3. JMU's site states: 'To ensure you receive consideration for all need-based scholarships, you should have your FAFSA submitted no later than January 1st.' The Centennial Scholars Program — JMU's largest need-based award — uses this deadline for full consideration.

If your student brings another scholarship

JMU applies federal/state over-award rules: total financial aid (institutional + federal + state + outside) cannot exceed cost of attendance. Outside scholarships must be reported via the Outside Scholarship/Award Notification Form. Receipt of outside funds 'may reduce your eligibility for need-based state and federal financial aid.' The package can fluctuate throughout the year as outside aid is reported.

JMU's official aid offer documentation states: 'Federal and state regulations also require the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships to consider any outside sources of assistance when offering financial aid. These outside sources can be JMU scholarships, private scholarships, veteran's benefits, tuition waivers, etc.' The displacement ordering (loans vs grants first) is not publicly specified — that determination is case-by-case. Outside scholarship checks should be mailed to the University Business Office, MSC 3516.
