Stacking Outside Scholarships at MACU

How MACU treats outside scholarships when they arrive on top of institutional merit aid.

The verdict

Mixed displacement

At MACU, an outside scholarship is treated category-by-category, where some aid stacks and some displaces. The strategy follows from that: the answer depends on which aid category the outside award lands against, so get the order in writing.

Stacking policy at MACU

MACU publishes pairwise no-stacking rules (3SLI vs State/National Leadership) and a tuition-and-fees cap on the Alumni Scholarship ('cannot be stacked with any other institutional scholarship that exceeds the cost of tuition and fees'). No general policy on private OUTSIDE scholarships was found on the pages opened.

Documented rules are institutional-vs-institutional. Institutional scholarships are restricted to traditional 16-week students. Outside-scholarship treatment unknown.

Common stacking mistakes

  • Expecting to combine the 3SLI and State/National Leadership scholarships.

MACU states each 'cannot be stacked' with the other — qualifying for both still yields one $2,000/year award.

  • Stacking the Alumni Scholarship past tuition and fees.

The Alumni Scholarship 'is to only assist in covering tuition and fees and cannot be stacked with any other institutional scholarship that exceeds the cost of tuition and fees' — it cannot push total institutional aid above billed tuition + fees, and cannot be redeemed for cash.

  • Coasting through the first semester.

The Alumni Scholarship requires completing 12 hours with a 2.0+ GPA 'during their first 12 hours. Failure to meet these requirements will result in no scholarship being awarded.'

  • Missing state grant deadlines that stack with merit.

Per MACU's aid page: SEOG requires FAFSA by March 1; OTAG FAFSA 'as soon as possible after Oct. 1 and at the latest completed by Dec. 1'; OTEG by March 15 (fall) / Oct. 15 (spring). MACU's FAFSA priority date is two weeks before each start date.

Stacking questions families ask

What Church of God awards exist?
MAP (up to $6,000/yr for future CHOG pastors), V2G ($1,500/semester via a church covenant), Church Match (up to $1,000/yr), CHOG Pastor/Staff ($2,000/yr), and 3SLI or State/National Leadership ($2,000/yr, not stackable with each other).

Rules that bite at MACU

The trip wires we'd flag in a custom playbook. Each is derived from MACU's own published policy, not generic advice.

  • displacementDifferent aid types are displaced differently

MACU treats loans, work-study, and institutional grant under different rules. The same $5,000 outside award can land against any of them depending on category.

A binding written answer beats a verbal hallway promise. This script is keyed to MACU's published displacement type. Paste it, fill in your name, and send it before you accept an outside award.

Subject: Outside-scholarship treatment question, fall applicant

Dear MACU Financial Aid Office,

I'm a fall applicant reviewing how outside scholarships interact with my institutional aid package. I've read the public policy at https://www.macu.edu/prospective-student/scholarships/alumni-scholarship/.

Which institutional aid types are protected from outside-award displacement, and which can be reduced?

Is the displacement order published anywhere internally, even if not on the public site? Families need this to compare schools.

A written answer (email is fine) is important because the outside-scholarship awarding bodies want confirmation before disbursing. Thank you for the time.

How MACU compares across our verified dataset

  • 86 of 751 verified schools in our dataset use mixed displacement.

MACU is in the modest minority (86 schools share this category). That framing matters when comparing peer schools that may publish the policy differently or not at all.

  • 669 of 751 verified schools publish at least one four-year renewable merit award.

MACU is one of them. The cohort minority (82 schools) only awards one-year scholarships, which means the four-year value families assume on a brochure quote isn't guaranteed at every school.
