Renewal risk profile

North Carolina A&T's top merit tiers carry renewal floors at or above 3.5 cumulative GPA, which is above the median freshman college GPA at most US flagships. A single rough semester can knock a four-year award out without a published reinstatement path. Plan year-one course load with renewal in mind, not just first-year survival.

  • Cheatham-White Scholarship (Honors Distinguished Scholars Program): 3.5 GPA
  • Lewis and Elizabeth Dowdy Scholarship (Honors Distinguished Scholars Program): 3.5 GPA
  • February One Scholarship (Honors Distinguished Scholars Program): 3.5 GPA

  • Merit Scholarships (automatic on the admission application): See notes

How families lose this aid

  • Assuming the Cheatham-White / Dowdy / February One full-rides are automatic if your stats are high enough.

They are competitive and holistic, awarded through the Honors College via a SEPARATE application (school or self-endorsed nomination, two letters of recommendation, finalist interviews at Honors Weekend) by the November 15 priority deadline. Meeting the 4.0/3.75 GPA floor only makes you eligible to apply — it does not award the scholarship.

  • Confusing 'automatic consideration for scholarships' with a guaranteed dollar award.

Incoming freshmen are automatically considered for Merit Scholarships once admitted (no separate application), but NC A&T explicitly says 'Merit award criteria varies and dependent upon funding' and publishes no amount, GPA grid, or guaranteed floor. There is no published automatic-merit dollar table the way some private colleges have.

  • Missing the November 1 (admission/Merit) and November 15 (Honors full-ride) priority deadlines.

A completed admissions application must be on file by November 1 for priority Merit scholarship consideration, and the Honors College application is due November 15 for the full-ride Distinguished Scholars awards. The National Alumni Scholarship has its own Nov 1 – Jan 10 window. Late applicants lose priority consideration.

Renewal questions families ask

Is the Cheatham-White Scholarship automatic if I have a 4.0?
No. A 4.0 weighted cumulative GPA (and 1280 SAT / 28 ACT, test-optional) only makes you eligible to apply. The award is competitive and holistic — you must submit the Honors College application with a nomination and two letters, and finalists interview at Honors Weekend. It is renewable if you keep a 3.5 cumulative GPA and stay active in the Honors College.
Does NC A&T publish guaranteed merit scholarship amounts?
No. The university says Merit award 'criteria varies and dependent upon funding' and does not publish dollar amounts or a GPA grid for its general merit scholarships. The named full-ride awards (Cheatham-White, Dowdy, February One, National Alumni) describe their coverage but not a single flat dollar figure.

Rules that bite at North Carolina A&T

The renewal trip wires we'd flag in a custom playbook, derived from North Carolina A&T's own tier rules and not generic advice.

  • renewalCheatham-White Scholarship (Honors Distinguished Scholars Program): renewal floor that quietly knocks awards out

Renewable contingent on maintaining a 3.5 cumulative GPA annually, enrolling full time each semester and earning a minimum 30 credit hours each academic year, and maintaining membership and active participation in the Honors College. A single rough term can end a four-year award here without warning if the GPA floor isn't met cumulatively.

How North Carolina A&T compares across our verified dataset

  • 69 of 751 verified schools publish a top renewal tier requiring 3.5+ GPA or major-GPA gating.

North Carolina A&T is one of them. Calibrate year-one academic load against the renewal floor, not just freshman survival.

  • 669 of 751 verified schools publish at least one four-year renewable merit award.

North Carolina A&T is one of them. The cohort minority (82 schools) only awards one-year scholarships, which means the four-year value families assume on a brochure quote isn't guaranteed at every school.
