Sweet Briar
Decision sheet

Virginia · Research checked 2026-06-07 · School research, not an aid offer

The starting point

Sweet Briar considers every applicant for a merit scholarship automatically (no published amount grid), and layers on named full-tuition awards — SBCommitment for Pell-eligible Virginians and the Al Stroobants Foundation Grant for two local Virginia women — plus regional and talent scholarships.

Selection beyond grades and scores. These awards are not recorded as automatic on grades and scores. Read each award's selection rules, application steps and dates. Meeting a minimum is not an award offer.

Awards to discuss

First 3 of 6 recorded awards, in chapter display order. This is a selection, not a ranking. Read the full chapter for all awards. Amounts retain the original units and conditions; confirm the entering year with the school.

Merit Scholarships (automatic consideration)

Amount not published · Published award terms

Not recorded as automatic on grades and scores. Read the selection rules.

Eligibility: Based on GPA, academic achievement and other criteria; all applicants automatically considered during application review

Renewal: Sweet Briar merit awards are renewable based on the GPA stated in your merit scholarship letter.

Other terms: No dollar amounts or GPA/test grid are published. The College points prospective students to its Scholarship Calculator / Net Price Calculator for an estimate. Automatic CONSIDERATION is stated, but no page states an award is automatically granted at a fixed amount from stats, so automaticOnStats is set false.

SBCommitment Scholarship

Full tuition · Published coverage or package

Not recorded as automatic on grades and scores. Read the selection rules.

GPA: 3.5 GPA or higher

Eligibility: Pell Grant–eligible; Virginia resident; domestic, first-time, first-year student

Renewal: Not marked as renewable in this record. Ask the school whether renewal is available.

Other terms: Full tuition only — room & board and fees are not stated as covered. Virginia applicants are automatically considered (no separate application stated), but eligibility is gated on Pell eligibility and residency, not stats alone.

Margaret Jones Wyllie ’45 Engineering Scholarship

$5,000 · Published amount

Not recorded as automatic on grades and scores. Read the selection rules.

Eligibility: Academic achievement and demonstrated interest in engineering (engineering science major); separate application

Renewal: Renewable for up to three additional years, providing a total award of $20,000 over four years.

Other terms: Not need-based. Page states this award may be combined with other forms of financial aid offered by Sweet Briar.

Ask before you decide

  1. Which entering-year policy and residency category apply to us? What are the admission and scholarship deadlines?
  2. What grades and credits are required to renew, and for how many terms?
  3. How would other school awards or outside scholarships change the offer?

Recorded stacking policy: All scholarships — Sweet Briar's own and outside/private awards — are counted as part of the financial aid package, the total package may not exceed the student's need/cost of attendance, and outside gift aid that arrives later triggers a review. When an adjustment is needed, Federal Work-Study or need-based student loans are reduced before any need-based grant.

The research date is not a guarantee that a policy still applies. Confirm current amounts, deadlines and conditions with the school before making a financial decision.
