Renewal risk profile

UAH's renewal bar is achievable for steady students but isn't generous. Most awards require a cumulative GPA in the 3.0–3.4 band plus full-time enrollment. Audit the strictest tier on this school's list before assuming the four-year value is locked in.

  • Freshman Out-of-State Academic Scholarship (non-Alabama & U.S.-residing international) — GPA × ACT/SAT grid: Full-time enrollment

How families lose this aid

  • Counting on the lowest GPA band without a test score.

For the 3.0–3.49 GPA band, the test-optional column is blank — no automatic award is listed without a qualifying ACT/SAT score. You need a test score to be awarded in that band.

  • Letting your GPA slip below 2.5.

Renewal requires a minimum cumulative UAH GPA of 2.5 at the end of each spring semester plus 24 UAH credit hours per year. Fall below and you go on a one-year probation; fail to recover and you lose the scholarship.

Renewal questions families ask

How is my UAH merit award determined?
By a published grid combining your high school GPA, your highest ACT/SAT superscore (or a test-optional column), and your residency. In-state awards range $2,000–$8,500/yr (full tuition at the top); out-of-state awards range $5,000–$22,000/yr.
How do I keep the scholarship each year?
Enroll full-time, maintain a minimum cumulative UAH GPA of 2.5 at the end of each spring semester, and complete at least 24 UAH credit hours per academic year. It's a four-year award renewable for up to eight fall/spring semesters.

Rules that bite at UAH

The renewal trip wires we'd flag in a custom playbook, derived from UAH's own tier rules and not generic advice.

  • renewalFreshman In-State Academic Scholarship (Alabama residents) — GPA × ACT/SAT grid: renewal floor that quietly knocks awards out

Four-year award (up to eight fall/spring semesters). Renew by enrolling full-time, maintaining a minimum cumulative UAH GPA of 2.5 at the end of each spring semester, and completing at least 24 UAH credit hours per academic year. A single rough term can end a four-year award here without warning if the GPA floor isn't met cumulatively.

How UAH compares across our verified dataset

  • 669 of 751 verified schools publish at least one four-year renewable merit award.

UAH is one of them. The cohort minority (82 schools) only awards one-year scholarships, which means the four-year value families assume on a brochure quote isn't guaranteed at every school.

  • 133 of 751 verified schools publish a dedicated National Merit Finalist package.

UAH is one of them. NMF packages typically carry their own stacking and renewal carve-outs separate from the standard automatic merit ladder; confirm those before assuming the headline NMF value is final.
