Western Carolina
Decision sheet

North Carolina · Research checked 2026-06-03 · School research, not an aid offer

The starting point

WCU's headline price is NC Promise — tuition set by the state at $500/semester in-state ($3,500/semester out-of-state) — and on top of that almost every admitted first-year student gets the automatic, weighted-GPA Catamount Commitment scholarship ($1,000-$3,000/year) plus a one-time $1,000 ENGAGE award.

More than one award path. Some awards use published academic thresholds. Others have different selection criteria. A score chart does not describe every award at this school.

Awards to discuss

Ask before you decide

  1. Which entering-year policy and residency category apply to us? What are the admission and scholarship deadlines?
  2. What grades and credits are required to renew, and for how many terms?
  3. How would other school awards or outside scholarships change the offer?

Recorded stacking policy: WCU caps total aid (scholarships + grants + work-study + loans) at the student's cost of attendance, and a new scholarship 'may necessitate a reduction in other financial aid.' This is a COA-cap rule. The ENGAGE award is explicitly stackable 'up to the cost of attendance.' Outside scholarships must be reported to the Financial Aid Office; no separate rule states whether they reduce institutional merit specifically vs. need-based/self-help aid.
