Scholarship Displacement

The reduction of institutional financial aid when an outside scholarship is added to a student’s package, effectively replacing one source of aid with another rather than adding to the total. The degree of displacement depends on the school’s published stacking policy.

What it means

Displacement is the reason winning a scholarship does not always mean paying less. When total aid exceeds COA, the school must reduce something. If the school reduces institutional grants to make room for the outside scholarship, the family’s net cost stays the same. The outside scholarship displaced the institutional aid rather than adding to it.

Three categories of displacement policy exist. Loan-first schools reduce loans and work-study before grants, which produces the best outcome for families. COA-cap schools reduce institutional grants only when total aid crosses the COA ceiling. Grant-first schools reduce institutional grants dollar-for-dollar, which can negate the outside scholarship entirely.

Displacement is the single most important concept for outside scholarship strategy. Before investing hours in an application, check whether your target school’s policy will actually let the award reduce your cost or simply reshuffle the package. The answer determines whether the application is worth the time.

Worked example

Example

A student at a grant-first school has $40,000 in institutional need-based grants, $5,500 in loans, and $2,000 in work-study against a $52,000 COA. Net cost: $4,500. The student wins a $5,000 outside scholarship. Total aid becomes $52,500, exceeding COA by $500. The school reduces the institutional grant by $5,000 (grant-first policy). New package: $35,000 institutional grant + $5,000 outside scholarship + $5,500 loans + $2,000 work-study = $47,500. Net cost: $4,500. The family spent 40 hours on the outside scholarship application and the net cost did not change by a single dollar.
