Bluefield
Decision sheet

Virginia · Research checked 2026-07-02 · School research, not an aid offer

The starting point

DRAFT: Bluefield University's merit aid is GPA-driven and modest on paper ($3,000-$13,000 academic scholarships with no published grid), but Virginia residents can layer large flat 'tuition discounts' with VTAG and Pell to push tuition near zero, and two competitive Presidential Scholarships cover full tuition.

Selection beyond grades and scores. These awards are not recorded as automatic on grades and scores. Read each award's selection rules, application steps and dates. Meeting a minimum is not an award offer.

Awards to discuss

First 3 of 8 recorded awards, in chapter display order. This is a selection, not a ranking. Read the full chapter for all awards. Amounts retain the original units and conditions; confirm the entering year with the school.

Academic Scholarships (Alumni, Achievement, Deans', Harman, Lansdell, Opportunity, and Trustees)

$3,000-$13,000 · Published range

Not recorded as automatic on grades and scores. Read the selection rules.

GPA: GPA is used to determine the amount; no specific GPA cutoffs or award grid published

Eligibility: Degree-seeking; number of scholarships is limited; award must be accepted within 45 days

Renewal: Renewable for four years if enrolled full time and maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress. Per the SAP policy page, undergraduates need a 1.75 cumulative GPA through 57 career hours attempted and 2.0 at 58+ hours, must complete 67 percent of all cumulative credit hours attempted, and stay within 150 percent of the degree's credit-hour requirement; failing SAP after the warning period makes a student 'ineligible for federal student aid and institutional program funding.'

Other terms: No published GPA/test grid — the page says only that 'Your GPA will be used to determine the amount of the scholarship.' Amounts are not guaranteed-automatic; the school states the number offered is limited.

Presidential Scholarship

Full tuition · Published coverage or package

Not recorded as automatic on grades and scores. Read the selection rules.

Eligibility: Only two (2) new freshmen per year; two letters of recommendation, on-campus interview, and an essay reviewed by select faculty

Renewal: Renewable up to four years: full-time enrollment, maintain BU cumulative GPA of 3.5 (reviewed at the end of each spring semester), continual enrollment (excluding summers), and 45 hours of tutoring per semester during Junior and Senior years.

Other terms: Full TUITION only — not full cost of attendance (on-campus COA total budget is $42,880). Competitive selection, not stat-automatic.

Eligibility: Ten freshmen per year; two letters of recommendation, on-campus interview, and essay reviewed by select faculty

Renewal: Renewable up to four years: full-time enrollment, maintain BU cumulative GPA of 3.0 (reviewed at the end of each spring semester), continual enrollment (excluding summers), and 30 hours of tutoring per semester during Junior and Senior years.

Other terms: An ADDITIONAL $1,000 on top of academic scholarships, awarded by competition to ten freshmen.

Ask before you decide

  1. Which entering-year policy and residency category apply to us? What are the admission and scholarship deadlines?
  2. What grades and credits are required to renew, and for how many terms?
  3. How would other school awards or outside scholarships change the offer?

Recorded stacking policy: Bluefield's own example shows institutional tuition discounts stacking with the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant and the federal Pell Grant. Outside awards must be reported and are added into the student's aid package, which 'directly impacts your balance due'; SAGE Tuition Rewards are absorbed into normal institutional/merit scholarships rather than stacking on top; the International Scholarship cannot be combined with athletic or performing-arts scholarships. The school does not publish a loan-first/grant-first displacement order for outside awards.
