Bluefield Merit Aid

1. Sitting on the award letter past the 45-day acceptance window.+

   Bluefield states: 'Once you receive your award letter, you will have 45 days to accept it, thereby "locking in" your financial aid,' and for academic scholarships 'The number of scholarships offered is limited, so students have only 45 days to accept their award to ensure they receive it.' Miss the window and a limited-supply scholarship can be lost.

2. Treating the Presidential or MK of CBF 'full-tuition' scholarships as a full ride.+

   Both awards cover full TUITION only. The university's on-campus Cost of Attendance total budget is $42,880, of which tuition is only part — room & board ($11,770 on the COA page), fees, travel, and personal costs are not covered. The school's own discount estimates also warn: 'These estimates are for tuition only and do not include the cost of room and board.'

3. Missing the renewal cliffs and service requirements on the top awards.+

   The Presidential Scholarship requires maintaining a 3.5 BU cumulative GPA (reviewed every spring), continual enrollment, AND 45 hours of tutoring per semester in junior and senior years; Spire requires a 3.0 GPA plus 30 hours of tutoring per semester in junior/senior years; academic scholarships require full-time enrollment and Satisfactory Academic Progress for all four years.

4. Expecting SAGE Tuition Rewards to stack on top of merit scholarships.+

   Bluefield's page states: 'Bluefield University includes Tuition Rewards as part of the normal institutional and merit scholarships' — they are the minimum scholarship, not an add-on. Also, 'Bluefield University must receive confirmation from SAGE of your Tuition Rewards within 10 days of applying to our institution,' a tight deadline families miss.

5. Assuming the International Scholarship can be combined with athletic or fine-arts money.+

   The page says it 'May be awarded to international students who are not receiving an athletic or performing arts scholarship' — an explicit one-or-the-other restriction.

6. Not reporting outside/private scholarships to the Financial Aid Office.+

   Bluefield requires notification: the outside award is added into your aid package, 'which directly impacts your balance due,' and unreported awards can create a federal overpayment condition that 'may affect whether you are eligible to receive certain grants and loans in the future.' The school does not publish whether outside money reduces loans or grants first — ask before committing.

7. Virginia residents missing the July 31 VTAG deadline or failing the domicile test.+

   VTAG is worth $5,250/year for on-ground students ($2,625 online) but requires the application 'completed by July 31 to be guaranteed state funding,' Virginia domicile, and that the student 'must not have moved to Virginia for the purpose of attending a post-secondary school.'

8. Assuming the military/veteran discount applies automatically.+

   Per the Tuition & Fees page: 'Students must request the military discount and submit proper documentation in order to receive it. It is not automatically awarded,' there are 'No retroactive discounts for prior terms,' and spouses/dependents, Church Partnership students, and MABS students are excluded.

9. Going test-optional without realizing scores can raise the aid award.+

   The admissions page says: 'If you choose to submit standardized test scores, which may improve your financial aid award, we look for: A minimum SAT score of 970 ... A minimum CLT score of 62 ... A minimum ACT score of 18.' Withholding solid scores may leave scholarship money on the table.

10. Skipping the FAFSA because you only want merit aid.+

    The university catalog states students 'who wish to be considered for all types of financial aid, including Federal Programs, State Programs, and most Institutional Grants and Scholarships, should complete' the FAFSA-based process no later than March 15 (traditional students), and the need-based Bluefield Access Scholarship explicitly requires the FAFSA.

DRAFT: Strongest for Virginia-domiciled students — especially Pell-eligible commuter or on-campus students — who can stack the school's flat tuition discounts with the $5,250 VTAG. High-GPA students (3.5+) also have shots at the two full-tuition Presidential Scholarships, the $1,000 Spire award, and the Honors Program scholarship.

Bluefield's own example shows institutional tuition discounts stacking with the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant and the federal Pell Grant. Outside awards must be reported and are added into the student's aid package, which 'directly impacts your balance due'; SAGE Tuition Rewards are absorbed into normal institutional/merit scholarships rather than stacking on top; the International Scholarship cannot be combined with athletic or performing-arts scholarships. The school does not publish a loan-first/grant-first displacement order for outside awards.

Three groundable rules: (1) Outside awards: 'It is important to notify the Financial Aid Office if you receive an outside award. This includes the award in your individual award package' — no published order of displacement. (2) SAGE Tuition Rewards: 'Bluefield University includes Tuition Rewards as part of the normal institutional and merit scholarships' — i.e., they represent the minimum scholarship, not an add-on. (3) International Scholarship is restricted to students 'who are not receiving an athletic or performing arts scholarship.' • What is the scholarship deadline?

  There is no single published merit-scholarship deadline. Key dates from Bluefield's pages: FAFSA priority deadline March 15 for new students (March 30 for returning); priority deadline for all other financial aid requirements June 1; Virginia VTAG application by July 31 to guarantee state funding; Bluefield's private/endowed scholarship applications due July 1st or by the specified deadline per award; and once your award letter arrives you have 45 days to accept it.

• Is the Presidential Scholarship a full ride?

  No. It is a full-TUITION scholarship awarded to only two new freshmen per year. Room & board, fees, and other costs (on-campus COA total budget $42,880) are not covered, and renewal requires a 3.5 BU GPA plus 45 hours of tutoring per semester in junior and senior years.

• Are Bluefield's academic scholarships automatic based on my GPA or test scores?

  Bluefield does not publish an automatic GPA/test award grid. Academic scholarships range from $3,000 to $13,000, 'Your GPA will be used to determine the amount,' the number offered is limited, and awards must be accepted within 45 days. Submitting test scores is optional but 'may improve your financial aid award.'

• How much is the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG) at Bluefield?

  Per Bluefield's pages, $5,250 per year for on-ground students and $2,625 for online students. You must be a domiciled Virginia resident who did not move to Virginia to attend school, and apply by July 31 (prior-year recipients do not reapply).

• Will outside scholarships reduce my Bluefield aid?
