Eastern Kentucky University Merit Aid

Beginning Fall 2026, EKU's 'Eastern Experience' model gives every admitted in-state, on-campus, full-time freshman an automatic merit scholarship of $1,000-$9,000/year based on a published unweighted-GPA (plus optional test) grid — no application needed — but those awards do NOT stack with any other scholarship or tuition waiver.

Rules that bite at Eastern Kentucky University

The trip wires we'd flag in a custom playbook. Each is derived from Eastern Kentucky University's own published policy, not generic advice.

  • renewalRegent's Award (Eastern Experience): renewal floor that quietly knocks awards out

Renews with a 3.2 EKU GPA, 24 earned EKU hours, full-time enrollment. Awarded for 8 continuous semesters. A single rough term can end a four-year award here without warning if the GPA floor isn't met cumulatively.

  • displacementNo published displacement order

Eastern Kentucky University's policy doesn't specify whether outside scholarships hit loans, grants, or only the COA ceiling. Get a written aid-office answer before chasing private awards.

Common merit-aid mistakes at Eastern Kentucky University

  1. The Regent's Award ($9,000) requires BOTH a 3.8+ GPA AND a 28+ ACT / 1310+ SAT. A 3.8-4.0 GPA student without that test score receives the President's Award at $7,000.

  2. EKU states institutional merit awards 'may not be stacked with other scholarships or tuition waivers.' For example, an Academic Common Market tuition waiver makes you ineligible for merit. (The transfer PTK scholarship is the documented exception that IS stackable.)

  3. The Regent's/President's/One Eastern/Excellence/Promise grid is for 'in-state, on-campus, first time freshman only.' Non-residents instead get the flat $12,000/yr out-of-state tuition rate, not the merit grid.

  4. EKU does not accept ACT superscores; the composite from a single test date is used.

  5. ACM participants already receive an in-state-rate tuition waiver, so per EKU's general scholarship policies they are NOT eligible for merit scholarships.

Who this school is for

In-state Kentucky students who want a guaranteed, automatic, GPA-based merit floor at an affordable public regional university; strong students (3.8+ GPA, 28+ ACT) hit the $9,000 Regent's Award. Out-of-state students get a flat low non-resident tuition rate ($12,000/yr) rather than a non-resident merit grid.

Notes

NOTABLE EXCEPTION to EKU's no-stack rule: this PTK award is explicitly described as stackable with other university merit scholarships and out-of-state tuition discounts. Transfer-only.

Source

Outside scholarship stacking policy

EKU institutional scholarships, including merit awards, generally CANNOT be stacked with other scholarships or tuition waivers. The notable exception is the transfer PTK Scholarship, which is explicitly stackable. Separately, the Academic Common Market (out-of-state in-state-rate program) makes a student ineligible for merit because it already provides a tuition waiver. No explicit official rule was found describing how third-party OUTSIDE scholarships or the state KEES award displace institutional merit.

The scholarship-opportunities page states institutional merit may not be stacked with other scholarships or tuition waivers and requires the FAFSA. The general-policies page repeats that no-stack rule and adds that Academic Common Market participants are not eligible for merit because they already receive a tuition-rate waiver. PTK is carved out as stackable. How non-institutional outside scholarships and KEES interact with the merit grid is not stated on the official pages reviewed.

Replaced the prior GPA-based out-of-state discount. All non-resident students get the $12,000/yr rate without meeting GPA eligibility. Out-of-state students do NOT receive the in-state Eastern Experience merit grid (that grid is in-state only); the cut tuition rate is the non-resident affordability lever. 2026-27 rate not separately confirmed on an official page.

Eastern Kentucky University merit aid FAQ

  • Do I have to apply separately for EKU merit scholarships?

No. For in-state, on-campus, first-time freshmen, 'merit scholarships will automatically be applied to your account. No application needed!' You just need to apply for admission and be admitted. The award is set by your unweighted high-school GPA (and optional test score for the Regent's Award).

  • What's the deadline?

Official EKU pages cite a March 1 merit-scholarship and admission consideration deadline and a June 1 last-day-to-accept; one school-channel source cites April 15 to receive and June 30 to upgrade. Confirm the exact 2026-27 dates with Big E Central (859-622-2361) before relying on them.

  • Can I combine the merit scholarship with other awards?

Generally no. EKU institutional merit awards may not be stacked with other scholarships or tuition waivers; an Academic Common Market tuition waiver, for instance, makes you ineligible for merit. The transfer Phi Theta Kappa ($1,500) award is the documented exception that is stackable. How outside (third-party) scholarships and the state KEES award interact with merit is not stated on the official pages reviewed — ask the aid office.

  • How does the merit scholarship renew?

Awards renew on full-time enrollment, 24 earned EKU hours, and an EKU GPA of 3.2 (Regent's & President's) or 3.0 (One Eastern, Excellence, Promise). Merit scholarships are awarded for 8 continuous semesters; transfer scholarships for 6.

  • 199 of 751 verified schools publish no clear displacement order.

Eastern Kentucky University is one of them. The right move is the aid-office email script below, not a guess.

  • 669 of 751 verified schools publish at least one four-year renewable merit award.

Eastern Kentucky University is one of them. The cohort minority (82 schools) only awards one-year scholarships, which means the four-year value families assume on a brochure quote isn't guaranteed at every school.
