Renewal risk profile

Florida Southern's renewal bar is achievable for steady students but isn't generous. Most awards require a cumulative GPA in the 3.0–3.4 band plus full-time enrollment. Audit the strictest tier on this school's list before assuming the four-year value is locked in.

  • E.T. Roux Scholarship: 2.2 GPA
  • Edna Mae Pearce Lockett Scholarship: 2.2 GPA
  • Thad G. Buckner Scholarship: 2.5 GPA
  • Lucius P. Ordway Scholarship: 2.5 GPA
  • Emile E. Watson Scholarship: 2.5 GPA
  • William H. Danforth Scholarship: 2.75 GPA
  • Henry and Annie Merner Pfeiffer Scholarship: 2.75 GPA
  • Hollingsworth Scholarship (Prestige): 3.3 GPA
  • C.V. McClurg Scholarship (Prestige): 3.0 GPA

How families lose this aid

  • Assuming all FSC scholarships share one renewal GPA

Each named award has its OWN cumulative-GPA renewal floor (per the FSC Terms & Conditions): Hollingsworth 3.3, McClurg/Jenkins 3.0, Pfeiffer/Christoverson/Danforth 2.75, Watson/Ordway/Buckner 2.5, Lockett/Roux/Transfer 2.2. Fall below your award's floor and you forfeit it.

  • Expecting to drop to a lower scholarship tier if your GPA slips

FSC states 'Students do not move from one academic scholarship level to another academic scholarship level.' If you miss your tier's renewal GPA you lose the scholarship outright — you are not bumped down a rung.

  • Changing majors without checking your scholarship

'FSC scholarships specific to a student's major will be forfeited if the student changes majors. Those scholarships will not be replaced with other FSC funds.'

Renewal questions families ask

What are the Prestige (Hollingsworth) scholarship deadlines and requirements?
Priority deadline November 1, final deadline January 3. Applicants should be first-time first-year students with a 3.5+ GPA and at least a 29 ACT / 1330 SAT, in the top 10% of applicants, and must submit an essay and (if a finalist) interview with a faculty committee.
What GPA do I need to renew my merit scholarship?
It depends on which award you hold (per the FSC Terms & Conditions): e.g., Roux/Lockett/Transfer 2.2, Watson/Ordway/Buckner 2.5, Pfeiffer/Christoverson/Danforth 2.75, McClurg/Jenkins 3.0, Hollingsworth 3.3. Awards are for up to 8 semesters (4 years) of full-time study.

How Florida Southern compares across our verified dataset

  • 247 of 272 verified schools publish at least one four-year renewable merit award.

Florida Southern is one of them. The cohort minority (25 schools) only awards one-year scholarships, which means the four-year value families assume on a brochure quote isn't guaranteed at every school.
