Gustavus Adolphus Merit Aid

Every admitted first-year student is automatically placed into one of five named academic merit tiers from $25,000 to $42,000 per year — no separate application — and the award is locked at that level for up to four years.

Rules that bite at Gustavus Adolphus

The trip wires we'd flag in a custom playbook. Each is derived from Gustavus Adolphus's own published policy, not generic advice.

  • renewalGold Scholarship (academic merit tier): renewal floor that quietly knocks awards out

Stays the same for up to four years (eight semesters) of continuous full-time enrollment, provided the student meets required academic standards and remains in good standing. A specific renewal GPA is not published on the current scholarships page. A single rough term can end a four-year award here without warning if the GPA floor isn't met cumulatively.

Common merit-aid mistakes at Gustavus Adolphus

  1. You may hold only ONE of the five academic merit scholarships (Gold/Three Crowns/Dean's/President's/Excellence). Fine-arts and Esports/Clay Target awards are separate and stack on top of that single academic tier — but the academic tiers do not stack with each other.

  2. Gustavus explicitly states the Gold, Dean's, and President's merit scholarships are NOT awarded in addition to the First-Year Free Tuition program — it is an alternative, need-based package for low-income Minnesota residents, not an extra stack.

  3. The 2026-2027 total cost of attendance is $72,934 (tuition $59,624 + room $7,326 + meal plan $5,406 + fees $578). Even the top $42,000 Excellence Scholarship leaves roughly $30,000+ per year in tuition, housing, food and fees.

  4. Academic merit is automatic on admission with no application, but music/theatre/dance/art talent awards require a separate fine-arts scholarship application/audition — Early Action applicants should submit by the November 8 priority deadline.

  5. A legacy admission page lists the President's Scholarship at $38,000 with a 3.25 renewal GPA; the current 2026-27 scholarships page lists it at $40,000. Use the current $40,000 figure and confirm the renewal GPA with the aid office.

Who this school is for

Strong high-school students who want a large, predictable, automatic merit award at a private Lutheran (ELCA) liberal-arts college in Minnesota — especially those with arts talent (music/theatre/dance/art awards stack on top of the academic tier) or low-income Minnesota residents who may qualify for the separate First-Year Free Tuition program.

Tuition / cost of attendance: Approximately $72,934 for 2026-2027. Source

View requirements
Eligibility

NEED-BASED + RESIDENCY: must be admitted and start fall 2026, be a first-time full-time student, be a Minnesota resident, file the FAFSA, have family income below $80,000, and receive the MN State Grant or MN Dream Act. Determined automatically; no separate application.

Renewal terms

Notes

NEED-BASED program (income below $80,000, MN resident), NOT a merit award — included because it is a named, notable program. Academic merit scholarships (Gold, Dean's, President's) are NOT awarded in addition to this program; it is an alternative package, not a stack.

Outside scholarship stacking policy

A student may hold only ONE of the five academic merit tiers (Gold/Three Crowns/Dean's/President's/Excellence). Fine-arts talent awards (music, theatre & dance, art) and the Esports/Clay Target award are in addition to the academic tier. For OUTSIDE (third-party) scholarships, Gustavus first applies them to reduce the loan and/or job (work-study) portion; if total awards exceed demonstrated financial need, the Gustavus scholarship may be reduced.

Internal stacking: one academic merit tier only, plus fine-arts/activity awards on top. Outside-scholarship displacement: 'If I receive merit-based grant/scholarship aid from outside sources (excluding Federal Pell, ACG, SMART, and state grants), I can use these funds to reduce the loan and/or job portion of my financial aid award. If the awards exceed my demonstrated financial need, Gustavus scholarship may be reduced.' Students must notify the Financial Aid Office in writing of all outside scholarships, grants, and loans.

Gustavus Adolphus merit aid FAQ

  • Do I have to apply separately for the merit scholarship?

No. Academic merit scholarships ($25,000-$42,000/yr across the Gold, Three Crowns, Dean's, President's and Excellence tiers) are awarded automatically at admission based on your application — no additional application is required. Fine-arts (music/theatre/dance/art) talent awards DO require a separate application/audition, with a November 8 priority deadline for Early Action applicants.

  • Can I combine more than one Gustavus scholarship?

You may hold only ONE of the five academic merit tiers. Fine-arts talent awards and the Esports/Clay Target award are in addition to your academic tier. The need-based First-Year Free Tuition program is NOT combined with the academic merit scholarships.

  • What happens to my Gustavus aid if I win an outside scholarship?

You must notify the Financial Aid Office in writing. Outside merit scholarships (excluding Pell and state grants) first reduce the loan and/or work (job) portion of your package; only if your total awards exceed your demonstrated financial need may your Gustavus scholarship be reduced.

  • How long does the merit scholarship last?

Your merit scholarship stays at the same amount for up to four years (eight semesters) of continuous full-time enrollment, as long as you meet the required academic standards and remain in good standing. A specific renewal GPA is not published on the current scholarships page (a legacy page cites a 3.25 GPA for the President's Scholarship — confirm with the aid office).

How Gustavus Adolphus compares across our verified dataset

  • 99 of 751 verified schools in our dataset use loan-first displacement.

Gustavus Adolphus is in the modest minority (99 schools share this category). That framing matters when comparing peer schools that may publish the policy differently or not at all.

  • 669 of 751 verified schools publish at least one four-year renewable merit award.

Gustavus Adolphus is one of them. The cohort minority (82 schools) only awards one-year scholarships, which means the four-year value families assume on a brochure quote isn't guaranteed at every school.
