Hampden-Sydney
Decision sheet

Virginia · Research checked 2026-07-02 · School research, not an aid offer

The starting point

Hampden-Sydney auto-considers all male applicants for a named academic scholarship ladder ($45,000 down to $15,000) but publishes no GPA/test criteria, and its leadership awards (Eagle Scout, Boys State Citizen-Leader) replace rather than stack with the academic award.

More than one award path. Some awards use published academic thresholds. Others have different selection criteria. A score chart does not describe every award at this school.

Awards to discuss

First 3 of 5 recorded awards, in chapter display order. This is a selection, not a ranking. Read the full chapter for all awards. Amounts retain the original units and conditions; confirm the entering year with the school.

Academic Scholarships (named ladder)

$15,000-$45,000 · Published range

Recorded as automatic on academic criteria; all conditions apply.

Eligibility: All applicants for admission are automatically considered; no special forms required. Awarded to candidates with the highest levels of academic achievement. No GPA/test grid published.

Renewal: Renewal terms not stated on this page; confirm with the Office of Financial Aid.

Other terms: Named tiers for students entering as freshmen 2026-2027: Birthplace $45,000; Cushing $35,000; Venable $30,000; Middlecourt $28,000; Penshurst $25,000; Garnet & Grey $15,000-$20,000. The College does NOT publish the GPA/test thresholds that map to each tier.

Eagle Scout Scholarship

$120,000 ($30,000/yr) · Published award terms

Not recorded as automatic on grades and scores. Read the selection rules.

Eligibility: Accepted applicant who has earned (or will earn before matriculation) the rank of Eagle Scout and attends H-SC.

Renewal: Granted as $30,000 per year over four years.

Other terms: Awarded IN PLACE OF any primary academic scholarship (does not stack with the academic ladder). Page states it is for 'new students beginning in the fall of 2025' — confirm the current-cycle amount.

Boys State Participant (Citizen-Leader) Scholarship

$100,000 ($25,000/yr) · Published award terms

Not recorded as automatic on grades and scores. Read the selection rules.

Eligibility: Accepted applicant who has participated in Boys State and attends H-SC.

Renewal: Granted as $25,000 per year over four years.

Other terms: If the student's merit-based scholarship is BELOW $25,000/yr, the Citizen-Leader award takes its place. If the merit award is $25,000/yr or above, the student keeps the merit award and receives an additional $1,000/yr for Boys State participation.

Ask before you decide

  1. Which entering-year policy and residency category apply to us? What are the admission and scholarship deadlines?
  2. What grades and credits are required to renew, and for how many terms?
  3. How would other school awards or outside scholarships change the offer?

Recorded stacking policy: Outside awards reduce College aid only when combined grant aid would exceed billed costs (tuition, required fees, room, and board); reductions then come from the need-based grant first, then the academic scholarship, then the citizen/leader award.
