Renewal risk profile
McNeese's published renewal rules cluster around a 3.0 floor with no major-GPA gating, which is survivable for the typical freshman with steady study habits. The risk is non-renewal due to enrollment status (dropping below full-time), not GPA.

How families lose this aid
- Applying late and finding the money gone.
McNeese states 'Awarding will begin October 1 and will continue until funding is exhausted' — meeting the stats does not help if funds run out before your file is complete. The published priority date for Fall 2025 was December 15, 2024 (the financial-aid page lists December 15, 2025 as the scholarship priority for the 2025-2026 aid year).
- Counting the housing award as cash.
'Housing scholarships only apply to campus housing for students residing on campus' — commuters and off-campus students lose that component of the 1-year value entirely.
- Dropping to part-time or a light load.
Renewal requires earning 12 credit hours EACH regular semester plus maintaining 'the specified GPA' (the GPA number is not published — get it in writing from the scholarship office).
- Treating Honors College admission as stats-only.
Beyond the 3.40 GPA / 27 ACT / 1260 SAT thresholds, the Honors College requires a written essay, an interview with the admissions committee, and three recommendation letters — it is a competitive application, not an automatic award.
Renewal questions families ask
- How are the awards structured?
- Each tier pays a per-semester Fees/Books award ($1,000-$2,500) plus a per-semester Campus Housing award ($750-$2,000) — the housing part applies only to on-campus housing.
- What does renewal require?
- Scholarships run 8 regular semesters provided you earn 12 credit hours each regular semester and maintain 'the specified GPA.' The page does not publish the GPA number — ask the Office of Scholarships.
- What does the Honors College scholarship cover?
- Partial tuition and fees, partial room and board, and up to $1,200 annually for books and supplies — described as McNeese's best four-year academic scholarships. Exact dollar amounts are not published.
How McNeese compares across our verified dataset
- 665 of 749 verified schools publish at least one four-year renewable merit award.
McNeese is one of them. The cohort minority (84 schools) only awards one-year scholarships, which means the four-year value families assume on a brochure quote isn't guaranteed at every school.
