President's Scholar
RequirementsSeparate essay application by January 15. Invitation-only finalist weekend.
SMU's flagship full-ride. Requires a separate application in addition to admission.
SMU · Texas
Private Dallas university with a tiered automatic academic merit program plus departmental merit through Meadows and Dedman.
Merit-capable students who want a private university at a lower sticker price than most peers and can benefit from school-specific stacking analysis. SMU is the most likely of the Texas privates to crowd out outside aid once institutional awards are in place.
Tuition / cost of attendance: Approximately $63,000 for 2025-2026. Tuition approximation; full COA including room and board runs higher. Source
Every tier below is sourced to the school’s own published financial aid pages. Renewal terms apply only if the student maintains the stated GPA.

SMU's flagship full-ride. Requires a separate application in addition to admission.
Automatic based on admission review; no separate application.
SMU is the most likely of Texas private peers to displace institutional aid once an outside scholarship pushes the package toward tuition and fees.
SMU applies the federal cost-of-attendance cap to the full aid package. In practice this means outside scholarships added on top of institutional merit are more likely to reduce SMU's own award than to add dollar-for-dollar. The practical implication: chasing outside scholarships is less valuable at SMU than at comparable privates that use loan-first displacement. Named awards that don’t always surface on the main financial aid page. Each one has its own eligibility rules.
Main artistic lever. Stacks with academic merit. Amount varies based on audition — do not budget against a fixed number until the audition result lands.
Renewable with 3.3 GPA. Only worth pursuing if a Dedman major is the student's genuine primary interest.
Comprehensive award but narrow gate. Deadline January 15. Only pursue if Dallas County and Pell eligibility both apply.
Meadows awards are audition-based and variable. Students and families regularly assume a mid-range Meadows number when building the SMU budget, then find the actual audition result is lower. Do not plan SMU affordability against a Meadows estimate — wait for the audition letter.
Dedman Scholars requires a Dedman College primary major. A student interested in Meadows who lists Classics as a secondary interest does not qualify. If Classics is not the genuine primary major, cross Dedman Scholars off the list entirely.
SMU's stacking behavior makes outside scholarships less valuable here than at peer Texas privates. A Rotary or community foundation award that would add dollar-for-dollar at TCU may reduce SMU's institutional aid instead. Call the financial aid office at (214) 768-3417 before investing time in large outside scholarship applications.
SMU does not publish a hard GPA or test score threshold for its automatic tiers. The awards are based on a holistic admission review. The six tiers (University $10K up to Provost $30K) are assigned based on the strength of the application in context; the President's Scholar full-ride requires a separate essay by January 15.
Yes. SMU's academic merit scholarships renew for up to eight semesters with a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Falling below 3.0 triggers a review and may cost the renewal.
Yes, Meadows artistic merit stacks with the automatic academic tiers (University through Provost). The President's Scholar full-ride is a different case — it replaces rather than stacks because it already covers full tuition plus housing.
SMU has operated under a test-optional policy in recent cycles. Verify the current cycle's testing policy directly with SMU Admission before committing to a test-optional application strategy.
