Rules that could change the answer

These are the rules we would flag for your family. Each comes from Tougaloo's published information.

  • Renewal rulePresidential Academic Scholarship: renewal floor that quietly knocks awards out

3.5 GPA, 15+ hrs, Good Conduct, Renewal Contract A single rough term can end a four-year award here without warning if the GPA floor isn't met cumulatively.

What families often miss

  1. The checklist requires submitting a Scholarship Application through the Scholarship Portal, full acceptance, FAFSA, all materials 'by deadline: Fall: March 15; Spring: December 16,' and agreement to the Scholarship Policy. Nothing is automatic.

  2. 'Complete FAFSA' is a required checklist item for freshman and transfer academic scholarships.

  3. Every merit award's renewal requires '15+ hrs' plus the tier GPA (3.5 Presidential / 3.25 Eagle / 3.0 others), good conduct, and a signed Renewal Contract — 12 credits is full-time but will not renew the scholarship.

  4. The Early College High School Scholarship 'covers 2 remaining years only.'

  5. Fees are not listed in the Presidential benefit (only the ECHS award says 'Waived Fees'), and the cost page shows general/residential/technology fees and book charges billed separately from tuition, room, and board.

  6. Eagle requires 'Valedictorian or Salutatorian' standing, not just the 3.25 GPA.

How Tougaloo compares

  • 665 of 749 verified schools publish at least one four-year renewable merit award.

Tougaloo is one of them. The cohort minority (84 schools) only awards one-year scholarships, which means the four-year value families assume on a brochure quote isn't guaranteed at every school.
