    To maintain any merit or academic-based award from Valpo, a student must maintain full-time enrollment and Satisfactory Academic Progress. A single rough term can end a four-year award here without warning if the GPA floor isn't met cumulatively.

What families often miss

  1. Full tuition covers tuition only (or tuition and general fees), not the full $70,330 on-campus freshman cost of attendance, which also includes housing ($9,326), food ($5,894), books, and personal expenses (2026-2027 COA page).

  2. Both are last-dollar awards. The Ivy-Beacon Award covers only 'tuition and general fee not already met with state or federal grant assistance,' and the ILI scholarship 'will cover the rest of tuition and general fees not covered by other federal, state, and university grants/scholarships' — so other grants reduce what these awards pay, not your bottom line further.

  3. The transfer page states PTK 'Cannot be combined with Associates Degree Completion Scholarship,' and the Other Valpo Scholarships page states 'A student cannot receive both the Alumni Heritage Scholarship and Legacy Award.'

  4. The freshman scholarships page states: 'To maintain any merit or academic-based award from Valpo, a student must maintain full-time enrollment and Satisfactory Academic Progress.' Failure on any one SAP component (GPA, completion rate, or 150% timeframe) results in the loss of aid.

  5. The SAP page warns that 'some Valpo scholarships will normally require a higher cumulative GPA for renewal' — e.g., Guild scholarships require a 2.75 GPA, and the Guild awards also lapse if the relative's Guild membership lapses. Ask the aid office for the renewal GPA on each specific award.

  6. While the merit grid requires no separate application, both the freshman and transfer pages say to 'Add Valpo's school code (001842) to your FAFSA to maximize your scholarship consideration,' and several awards (Ivy-Beacon, ILI, Ament-Brenner) explicitly require the FAFSA.

  7. The Lutheran Leader full-tuition award and the Allen Scholarship use the Faith-Based Scholarship Application with a January 15 deadline, and Guild scholarship applications are due December 1 — separate from the no-deadline automatic merit consideration.

Valpo does not publish a general policy on whether outside (private) scholarships reduce institutional aid — the Outside Scholarships page only explains how to report them in DataVU and how funds are applied to the student account. Several specific awards have explicit anti-stacking or last-dollar rules: Phi Theta Kappa cannot be combined with the Associate's Degree Completion Scholarship, a student cannot receive both the Alumni Heritage Scholarship and the Legacy Award, and the Ivy-Beacon and Indiana Latino Institute full-tuition awards only fill the gap left after state/federal (and for ILI, university) grant assistance.
