UGA· Threshold Cliff Math
What Each Test-Score Line Is Worth at UGA
The cliff math: marginal annual aid value of crossing each ACT, SAT, and GPA threshold. Run this before deciding whether another retake is worth the prep money.
Why this page exists
UGA's automatic merit ladder has measurable cliffs between Foundation Fellow · in-state → out-of-state and Foundation Fellow · out-of-state → international. The marginal dollar value of one extra ACT point isn't linear. It concentrates around the published thresholds, which is why a strategic retake is sometimes worth more than test-optional positioning. The table below is the actual marginal-value math, not generic retake advice.
Where the dollars actually move
Each delta subtracts two named Foundation Fellowship tiers above. State HOPE/Zell carry no fixed dollar figure, so no cliff is computed against them beyond the Zell-vs-HOPE demotion noted in the matrix. The in-state Fellowship total leans on an estimated Zell value, so the residency delta is approximate.
| Threshold | Marginal value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation Fellow · in-state → out-of-state | about +$19,800/yr (≈ $44,940 − $25,084) | Largest cliff among the Fellowship tiers, driven mostly by the $19,040 Presidential waiver OOS Fellows receive. Approximate because the in-state base leans on an estimated ~$10,034 Zell value; this is roughly +79%, not a doubling. |
| Foundation Fellow · out-of-state → international | +$2,900/yr ($47,840 − $44,940) | Entirely the stipend step ($28,800 − $25,900); the $19,040 waiver is identical across both. |
What each profile actually lands at UGA
Every figure is a named tier's own dollar value. State HOPE/Zell amounts are set by Georgia statute (percentage and full in-state tuition respectively) and carry no fixed published dollar figure; the in-state Fellowship total leans on an estimated ~$10,034 Zell value and is approximate. The Foundation Fellowship stipends and waiver are stated dollar figures.
| Profile | Outcome | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| In-state · meets Zell Miller initial threshold | Zell Miller — full in-state tuition (tuition-capped) | Richer of the two state scholarships; falling from a 3.30 to a 3.00 Zell GPA demotes to HOPE. Cannot exceed semester tuition charges. |
| In-state · selected Foundation Fellow | Foundation Fellowship (in-state) — about $25,084/yr | $15,050 stipend stacked on Zell Miller (estimated ~$10,034, so the total is approximate); Nov 1 Honors College deadline. Adds funded travel-study and research grants. |
| Out-of-state · selected Foundation Fellow | Foundation Fellowship (OOS) — about $44,940/yr | $25,900 stipend plus a $19,040 Presidential tuition waiver. One of the strongest OOS public-flagship merit packages here. |
| International · selected Foundation Fellow | Foundation Fellowship (international) — about $47,840/yr | Largest single stipend tier ($28,800) plus the same $19,040 waiver. |
