Stacking Outside Scholarships at Elon

How Elon treats outside scholarships when they arrive on top of institutional merit aid.

The verdict

Loan-first displacement

At Elon, an outside scholarship reduces loan offers before touching institutional grants. The strategy follows from that: every $1 in outside scholarship is effectively $1 less in graduation debt.

elon.edu publishes the $73,403 cost-of-attendance worksheet the math is run against.

Stacking policy at Elon

Elon states that in most cases an outside scholarship will not reduce your Elon award. When a reduction is required, Elon cuts student loans and/or work first, and only reduces a scholarship or grant where absolutely necessary — a genuinely student-friendly, loan-first displacement order.

On Elon's financial aid FAQ, the university answers whether an outside scholarship affects the Elon award: in most cases it will not; where a reduction is required, Elon first reduces student loans and/or work, and only where absolutely necessary will it reduce a scholarship or grant. This protects competitive merit awards like Honors and Fellows from being wiped out by an outside scholarship in most cases.

Common stacking mistakes

  • Thinking you have to choose between the automatic Presidential Scholarship and a Fellows award.

They stack. The automatic Presidential Scholarship ($8,000-$12,000, given to about 15% of the class) and the $8,000 Fellows award are added together. The Honors Program package is explicitly built this way: $15,000 Honors plus a $12,000 Presidential equals $27,000 per year.

Stacking questions families ask

Will an outside scholarship reduce my Elon aid?
In most cases it will not. When a reduction is required, Elon first reduces student loans and/or work, and only where absolutely necessary will it reduce a scholarship or grant. That loan-first order protects competitive merit awards like Honors and Fellows from being displaced by outside money in most situations.

Subject: Outside-scholarship treatment question, fall applicant

Dear Elon Financial Aid Office,

I'm a fall applicant reviewing how outside scholarships interact with my institutional aid package. I've read the public policy at https://www.elon.edu/u/admissions/undergraduate/financial-aid/financial-aid-faq/ and the $73,403 cost-of-attendance worksheet.

If I win a $5,000 outside scholarship after the package is built, can you confirm it reduces my Direct Loan offer first, before any institutional grant is touched?

If the loan offer is smaller than the outside award, what is the next aid type that gets reduced (work-study, institutional grant, other)?

A written answer (email is fine) is important because the outside-scholarship awarding bodies want confirmation before disbursing. Thank you for the time.

How Elon compares across our verified dataset

  • 56 of 203 verified schools in our dataset use loan-first displacement.

Elon is in a recognizable cluster (56 schools share this category). That framing matters when comparing peer schools that may publish the policy differently or not at all.

  • 178 of 203 verified schools publish at least one four-year renewable merit award.

Elon is one of them. The cohort minority (25 schools) only awards one-year scholarships, which means the four-year value families assume on a brochure quote isn't guaranteed at every school.
