Colleges With Automatic Merit Scholarships

385 schools nationwide publish a merit scholarship you qualify for automatically by GPA and test score — no essay, no interview, no separate scholarship form.

Automatic vs. competitive merit

“Automatic” means the award follows a published formula. Nothing about it is a lottery.

A school runs automatic merit when it publishes a GPA and test-score formula and hands out the matching award to every admitted student who clears it, inside the normal admission decision. There is no separate scholarship application, no essay, and no committee vote — a family can calculate the exact minimum award before the student even applies. Competitive merit works the opposite way: the school selects a small number of winners from a much larger applicant pool, usually through a separate application, an interview, or a scholars weekend, and a perfect transcript is still no guarantee. The schools in the table below all publish at least one automatic tier; schools that award merit only through a competitive process aren’t listed here, since there is no formula to calculate in advance.

Browse automatic merit scholarships by state

Each state page below breaks its slice of the national table out on its own, from the same verified data. Only states with enough schools to clear our coverage floor get their own page; every school nationwide — including states without a dedicated page — is still in the full table further down.

Every verified school with automatic merit, nationwide

The table below covers all 385 schools in our verified database that automatically consider every admitted student for merit aid, sorted alphabetically by state (184 public, 201 private, across 50 states). Each row shows how many published automatic tiers that school runs and a sample of the actual award names and dollar amounts — drawn verbatim from that school's own verified merit-aid page, never estimated or inferred. Click a school to see its complete tier ladder, renewal rules, and stacking policy.
