Automatic Merit Scholarships by the Numbers, 2026

We projected every verified college record in MeritPlaybook into one national inventory. A school appears only when its published data contains an automatic merit award with an eligibility criterion.

389verified colleges
1,318distinct automatic tiers
50states and jurisdictions
277schools with multiple tiers

Finding 1

Automatic merit is not confined to one college type.

The dataset contains 185 public colleges and 204 private or religious colleges. “Automatic” means the school publishes an award triggered through the admission record or stated criteria. It does not mean every applicant wins, and it does not turn an unpublished amount into a promise.

Finding 2

One school can publish several award outcomes.

277 colleges publish more than one automatic tier. The outcomes may reflect academic, residency, National Merit, or other published criteria. The CSV retains the tier count and source URLs without inventing a minimum or maximum.
